What happens if you take the universe of Metro 2033 and remove the story from it? The creators of Until We Die have answered this question with their game. The player will have to start life after the apocalypse in the underground and fight against mutants. In addition we will have to deal with the development of the base, training of fighters and collecting resources. All this is simple in words, but fascinating in practice.
The player receives a subordinate station Elektrozavodskaya. In the role of the leader he will have to gather people around him and teach them how to live in the new conditions. The underground station itself will have to defend and build a barricade.
The leader himself can only shoot and issue commands. The rest of the work is done by the inhabitants of the station. There are four classes of workers available in the game:
To get a character in a certain class, a recruit must be given a certain tool. At the same time, recruits themselves have some intelligence. In the evenings they return to base and are not going to just sacrifice themselves.
Recruits can be used to perform various tasks. They can clear rubble and search through crates. This helps them find the resources they need to develop their base. They can also gather mushrooms and slugs, which are the main source of food.
And it would all be very simple if it weren’t for the mutants constantly attacking the base. They fall into several types: classic cannon fodder, mortars and giants. All of them attack at night and don’t let the player get bored. And on high difficulty level gamers have no margin for error.
To reduce the intensity of attacks, will have to destroy the growths that spawn mutants. If nothing is done, the number of enemies will greatly increase. Diggers and Molotov cocktails are the best way to destroy the growths. As a result the player constantly has to choose what to do first: search for resources, train fighters, improve the base or destroy mutants.
Until We Die is a very atmospheric game. It is largely due to the detailed drawing of the world, which pays attention to all the little things. The developers also did their best with the music. During construction, you can hear the noise of the jackhammer, the slugs quack amusingly before they die, and the ear-splitting clap of destruction. You are led to believe that the station has a life of its own. Near the campfires, people sing songs, the driver of the diesel locomotive takes a break and plays his guitar.
It is safe to say that the players received a dynamic, beautiful, but at the same time challenging game. It will take a long time to master it, but it is addictive. Until We Die makes you want to play it again and again.
But the game has a serious flaw. The content is woefully inadequate. Only one underground station and a couple of bosses are available. You have to wait for the updates, but they are very rare.
